Assistant Director, Network Security

Salvador A. Ortega is the Assistant Director of Network Security at Vanderbilt University. He is responsible for campus network security services including firewalls, VPN systems, intrusion prevention systems, data security incident and event investigations, network vulnerability assessments, and host and network forensics.

Sal began his Information Technology career in 1998 at the University of Illinois. He joined Cargill Inc. in 2000 as part of the enterprise network traffic analysis team. Some notable accomplishments at Cargill involved Cargill application profiling, research on traffic analysis on VOIP over point-to-point IEEE 802.11 protocols and centralization of Cargill Grain ITS systems.

In 2004 he joined Sygen International as the Global Network Infrastructure Manager. Sal's accomplishments there included the global consolidation of several regional data centers and the design and implementation of an international remote and mobile security solution in 17 different countries.

Sal joined Vanderbilt ITS in 2006 as the Network Security Manager and was promoted to Assistant Director of Network Security in 2007.
