Microsoft® Office Groove is desktop collaboration software that enables people to share information with each other in a secure workspace where all content is fully encrypted, available on or offline, and can traverse any firewall. This is accomplished via peer-to-peer networking services. Peer-to-peer (P2P) is a type of network where each workstation has equivalent capabilities and responsibilities.
Depending on the needs of workspace participants, users can add tools as needed. Tools range from file areas to calendars to discussion boards. Rather than e-mailing a document to all participating in a project group, users may place a document in the project workspace where all participants can acquire it. If a participant edits that document, the newly edited version is synchronized on all participants' machines when they log in.
Groove is packaged with Microsoft Office Enterprise, or may be purchased as a standalone product. For price information, see http://its.vanderbilt.edu/license/platform/products.html. Licenses are good for one university-owned machine. If you wish to use Groove, you will also need to purchase a subscription for $1.20 per month, through 07/31/2008.
