Configure Your Email Client for VUmail (IMAP)

Keep this in mind when you use VUmail with another ISP:
To prevent unauthorized people from using our mail servers to send unsolicited commercial email ("spam"), technology leaders and support providers campuswide devised the following rules, which were instituted in August 1998. If you follow the configuration instructions below, you should be okay.
Rule 1. Any mail originating from a computer with a Vanderbilt network IP address will be accepted for relay regardless of destination.
Rule 2. Any mail originating from a computer with an IP address not belonging to Vanderbilt will be accepted for relay only to destinations within Vanderbilt.
Rule 3. Messages originating from a computer with an IP address not belonging to Vanderbilt will be accepted for relay to non-Vanderbilt destinations only if the "From:" header of the message contains a valid BCA.
NOTE: Make sure you know the following information before you configure your email client for use with VUmail:
- Your VUnetID and password (e-password if you have one, v-password if you don't)
- The name of your IMAP server
The form will be X.mail.vanderbilt.edu (where X is the first letter of your VUnetID.
For example, if your VUnetID is userja your IMAP server would be u.mail.vanderbilt.edu - The name of your SMTP server
The form will be X.smtp.vanderbilt.edu (where X is the first letter of your VUnetID.
For example, if your VUnetID is userja your SMTP server would be u.smtp.vanderbilt.edu - Your BCA
(Business Card Address)
The form will be firstname.m.lastname@vanderbilt.edu
For example, Jamie A. User would enter jamie.a.user@vanderbilt.edu
You can set up several BCAs for your account by modifying your options.
