On Campus Mounting Instructions for Windows 95/98/Me/2000/XP
Make sure that Client for Microsoft Networks is installed
1. To begin, double-click on the My Computer icon on the desktop. You should see a window similar to this one:
2. Next, double-click on the Control Panel icon. Double-click on Network.
3. The Network configuration window should look something like this:
You should see at least three entries, as listed above. In order for you to access VUspace, you must have the Client for Microsoft Networks installed.
If you already have this client installed skip to step six.
4. Otherwise, click on the Add ... button. You should see a window like this one:
5. Click once on Client, and then on Add... You will now see a window like this one:
Now click on Microsoft, then Client for Microsoft Networks, then click on OK.
6. You should now return to the Network configuration window. Highlight the Client for Microsoft Networks line. Next, click on the Properties ... button. It will open a new window that looks like this:
Make sure the Quick logon option is selected. At this time, the rest of the options should remain as they are in the window above. Now, click OK. You should return to the Network configuration window. Click OK once again.
7. At this point, you should be prompted to restart your computer:
Click on Restart Now... and wait while the computer restarts.
Should, your computer not prompt you to restart, you will need to restart the computer manually . To do this, go to the Start Menu (located at the lower left corner of your screen). Then, click on Shut Down. Select Restart and then press OK.
8. As your computer restarts, a window will appear that asks for your username and password:
If you're using Windows 95 or 98, it is important to log into the Microsoft Networking using your VUnetID and password. If you do not type these in, and simply push "Esc" or "Enter" to bypass the start up window, you will not be able to use the VUspace Mounter program.
9. Most users will have two methods to mount VUspace:
- Use the VUspace Mounter utility
- manually mount your VUspace
VUspace Mounter:
The VUspace Mounter utility is a small program that can automatically map your VUspace for you. Some locations (like computer labs, for example) may not have the VUspace Mounter utility available. In that case, you will need to manually mount your VUspace.
Manually mount your VUspace drive:
10. To mount your VUspace, right click on the My Computer icon on the desktop. You should see the following menu:
Click on the option Map Network Drive... You will know see a window like this one:

11. In this window, add the following information:
| Drive: | Here you choose an unassigned drive letter, on your system, to mount your VUspace to. For example select the letter V. |
| Path: | Here you must enter the VUspace path. The general path is: \\VUSPACE-X\USER . The path depends on the first letter of your VUnetID; replace the "X" above with the first letter of your VUnetID. |
| An Example: | If your username is smithjp, your VUspace path is \\VUSPACE-S\USER |
NOTE: The more recent versions of Windows (Me, 2000, XP) will allow you to "Connect using a different user name." This is useful if you didn't log into the computer with your VUnetID at startup.
12. Click on OK to continue. The system will mount your VUspace. To use your VUspace, double-click on the My Computer icon. You should see your VUspace mapped to the designated drive letter:
In our example above, the server vuspace-a has been mapped to drive E: . You can now access VUspace as if it were a local drive.
13. When you are finished using your VUspace, you should disconnect your VUspace so that no one else can access it. To disconnect your VUspace, right-click on My Computer to bring up this menu:
Select Disconnect Network Drive... .You will now see this window:
Select your VUspace drive and click OK.
