Vanderbilt University and Medical Center Wiring Standard

Excerpts from a memo by William Stead, MD, Director of Informatics Center to several Vanderbilt University Executive Administrators:

"In order to insure flexible, reliable, cost-effective intrabuilding communications wiring, equipment and pathways, the Vanderbilt communications technology groups: Vanderbilt Information Technology Services, Vanderbilt University Medical Center Informatics, and Vanderbilt Management Information Systems in cooperation with the Vanderbilt University Medical Center Space and Facilities and Vanderbilt University Campus Planning departments created the attached intrabuilding wiring standard. These groups also created a mechanism for updating the standard on an "as-revised" basis.

The goal is to decrease total cost of ownership by minimizing the need for renovation as use of space changes over time and reducing unneeded variability and the associated support costs. At the same time, we must be sensitive to up-front costs and the group has done a detailed analysis to show that the proposed standard does not increase costs significantly over industry standards even in the short term".
